CLINTON, S.C. - Karlee Taylor connected on a pair of late
three-pointers, including the go-ahead basket with 1:36 left on the
clock as host Presbyterian held off Charleston Southern in the Big
South opener on Wednesday night inside the Templeton Center as the
Blue Hose recorded the 58-57 victory.
Lakeitha Alston led the way with a game-high 25 points but the
senior forward was unable to connected on the game-winning basket
in the closing seconds for CSU (3-2, 0-1) as Presbyterian (4-3,
1-0) recorded their second win at home over Charleston Southern in
as many seasons with the victory.
Presbyterian was led by the duo of Shonda Burnside and Dria
David as they combined for 30 points, including 24 of the team's 33
in the first half on their way to the win. Burnside led the way
with 17 points and seven rebounds, while David had 13 points and
seven boards as PC held the 36-28 advantage on the glass.
Burnside and David had the hot hand early connecting on their
first shots to stake the Blue Hose to the early 4-0 lead. The Lady
Bucs battled back as Whitney Collins drove in for a layup and
converted a free throw attempt, while Bratcher made a layup to give
the Lady Bucs the 5-4 advantage.
Charleston Southern and PC battled evenly throughout the first
half before Anicia Dotson connected on a three-pointer to put the
score at 14-13 in favor of the Lady Bucs with 12:39 on the clock in
the first half. The trey sparked a 7-0 run with Dotson capping off
the stretch with a pair of free throws to put the score at 18-13
for Charleston Southern's largest lead of the first half.
Presbyterian battled back just before the half as Burnside
knotted up the score at 26-all with a jumper as PC rattled off an
8-0 run capped by another Burnside basket as the Blue Hose led
32-26.
Bratcher answered with her second three-pointer of the first
half to cut the lead down to three, but David converted a free
throw attempt in the closing seconds of the half to give PC the
33-29 lead heading into the locker room.
Presbyterian built on their run at the start of the second half,
going up 40-29 following a Burnside layup, but Alston snapped the
Blue Hose streak with a three-pointer. The basket sparked a 7-0
stretch in which Shay Jones converted a pair of free throws before
Alston converted a layup to put the score at 40-36.
PC went back up six at 46-40 following back-to-back layups by
David, but CSU brought the game all the way back, knotting up the
score at 46-all following an Alston jumper with 10:11 left in the
contest.
Charleston Southern would build a narrow lead with 3:53
remaining as Bratcher and Alston connected on back-to-back
three-pointers to put the score at 55-50, but Taylor hit a
three-pointer to cut the lead down to 55-53.
Alston stretched the game back to two-possessions with a layup
with 2:41 remaining in the game, but Devin Fothergill followed with
a layup to put the game at 57-55.
Taylor followed with her third three-pointer of the contest with
1:36 remaining on the clock as PC retook the lead.
CSU had two attempts to win the game over the final 90 seconds
but the Lady Bucs were unable to find the bottom of the net as CSU
committed an offensive foul and Alston's last-second jumper fell
short as the Lady Bucs fell in their conference opener on the road
to the Blue Hose, 58-57.
Bratcher evened her season-high with 15 points in the game,
while DJ Fowler had five points, five rebounds and five assists for
CSU as the Lady Bucs fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss.
Charleston Southern remains on the road as the Lady Bucs step
out of conference play to take on their second Atlantic Coast
Conference opponent on the season as CSU travels to Wake Forest,
N.C. on Saturday, December 1st to take on the Demon Deacons. Tipoff
for the game between CSU and Wake is set for 1 p.m.
