CHARLESTON, S.C.- It only took 4:45 in the 1st overtime to find a winner between Charleston Southern and Georgia Southern, Sunday September 11th on Buccaneer Field on the campus of Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C.

In a highly contested match the Lady Bucs rose to the occassion as they defeated Georgia Southern, Sunday afternoon. From the first whistle both teams battled throughout the game. The Lady Bucs struck first with a goal from Allison Lewis in the 4th minute of action. Lewis collected a ball at the top of the GSU box, took three dribbles and saw she did not have any options and let a 20 yard bomb rip off her foot. The ball looked high but dipped right under the bar leaving the GSU keeper with no chance for a save. As CSU looked to be on the strong foot, a keeper substitution after the goal sent GSU the message that their coaching staff wanted to walk out of Charleston with a win. After this move the game looked as if a prize fight was unfolding before the crowds eyes. Charleston Southern pressured Georgia Southern but then Georgia Southern would counter. Georgia Southern got on the board after Lady Bucs keeper Caitlin Cody mishandled a service into the box, which fell to the feet of Sara Oland who slotted the ball into an empty net.

The first half continued on as both teams kept pressuring each others goals and defense. GSU would make a attack on frame which would be thwarted and sniffed out by Casey Bolduc, Olivia Urig, and Hali Singleton, then as soon as that happened back on the other end of the pitch CSU would make an attempt whether it was long range shots from Aislinn McIlvenny or Emilia Faubert. One of the best chances to take the lead in the remaining part of the first half was from freshman Emilia Faubert. A set piece from about 30 yards out, was pinged in by Faubert towards the GSU goal and found the crossbar. It was on frame and destined for goal but just a bit high.

The second half of the match looked similar to the first half with both sides pushing numbers forward in efforts to score an allusive game winner. Georgia Southern kept pressuring the Lady Bucs defense but the Lady Bucs stood firm and up to the test. As the second half loomed closer to a close the Lady Bucs seemed to have gotten a second wind and started to press a tiring Georgia Southern defense. A set piece from 25 out saw Allison Lewis step up for a strike and as well catch the crossbar and bound out. The Lady Bucs pushed forward with Toni Lashley and Aislinn McIlvenny causing havoc for the GSU defense. It seemed in the last 2 mins of the match that either team could pull out a game winner but that was not to be so.

In the overtime period, CSU drew a foul outside of the GSU box and this looked to be the situation needed to produce a game winner. CSU drove a ball into the box and Anja Djumisic threw herself into the mix to get a head on the ball to keep the ball alive for the CSU offense. The ball bounds around in the air and Allison Lewis knods home the game winner to lift CSU to victory."Having been in a dry slump, this game does wonders for me.,"says Lewis. "I saw Anja go up and I wanted to some how find a way to get on the end of it and finish the game." The game was an all out battle with both teams amassing 20 fouls and 26 shots. Both teams fought tooth and nail to be the victor but CSU won the fight this day. "The game showed how much heart we have. Winning a game in overtime helps you psychologically throughout the season," Coach Eric Terrill comments on the win.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action against Francis Marion on Wednesday, September 14th at 4 p.m,. at Buccaneer Field on the campus of Charleston Southern. Admission is free.
