CSU Defeats Winthrop, 70-55; Tull Breaks Own Big South Record

Box Score Box score

Charleston, S.C. - The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern defeated the Eagles of Winthrop at a score of 70-55. The win improves the Bucs' record to 14-15 (8-8, Big South) and the loss drops Winthrops record to 12-17 (5-11, Big South). Charleston Southern earns the fifth seed in the Big South Conference tournament and will face tournament host High Point in the first round on Friday afternoon.

In her last game in Buccaneer Field House, senior guard Katie Tull broke her own single season record for three pointers in a single season. Last year in her junior campaign she hit 100 three pointers. After tonight's contest she has 105 for this season with at least one game to play. Tull also holds the all-time Big South record for three pointers made in a career with a total of 312. Tull led all scorers with 24 points on 6-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc as well as adding nine steals for the Bucs.

Fellow senior guard Kelsey Wasmer also had a nice outing in her last game at home. She scored 23 and added six boards for Charleston Southern.

CSU would start the game by going on a 7-0 run, and would not surrender the lead for the wire to wire win.

The Bucs were able to force turnovers from the Eagles of Winthrop in the early going. The Eagles committed ten turnovers in the first ten minutes of action alone. Charleston Southern would turn Winthrop's turnovers into points with 27 points of turnovers in the first half.

At half time the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern had a comfortable lead of 21 points at a score of 41-20.

In the second half Winthrop made a concerted effort to shut down the Big South Conference's leading scorer Tull, by shadowing her every move and giving her defender no help side responsibility.

The Eagles were making more shots on the offensive end of the floor but could not seem to get enough stops to mount any substantial comeback throughout the second half.

Winthrop would however make it interesting down the stretch. The Eagles would go on a 12-0 run to cut the Buccaneers lead to ten points with just under three minutes remaining. It would however be a case of too little too late for Winthrop.

Tonight's contest was in stark contrast to the two team's last meeting. In that game the Buccaneers atypically shot a poor percentage, going only 33% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc. Tonight Charleston Southern was moving the ball well on offense and being more judicious with their shot selection than in their first meeting, and that translated into made baskets. CSU would shoot 44% on the night from the field and 37% from three point land.

The win brings their Big South regular season to a close with an 8-8 record in conference play, but was inconsequential as far as seeding for the season ending tournament is concerned. CSU already secured the fifth seed going into tonight's contest. The Buccaneers will travel to High Point, N.C. where they will face tournament host and fourth seed High Point University. Tip-off for that game is set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
