CHARLESTON, S.C. - Helen Terry put up a career-high 26 points as
the Charleston Southern women's basketball team ended 2011 with a
bang, picking up a 76-67 Big South Conference win over the
Presbyterian Blue Hose on Saturday afternoon at the Buc Dome in
Charleston. The victory helps the Bucs continue on one of the
best starts in program history, moving them to 8-4 overall and 1-0
in league play.
Terry went 8-of-13 from the field and sunk four 3-pointers as
she bested her previous career high by three points and led all
players in scoring. She was one of four Buccaneers in double
figures, as Lakeitha Alston overcame a previous injury to put up 13
points and grab six boards. Erin Bratcher, starting in place of
Kiki Rutledge, also contributed with 12 points, as did Shay Jones
(12 points). Terry also led the CSU rebounding effort with seven
boards and had a team-high five assists. The Buccaneers shot an
impressive 53.2 percent from the field and sunk 12 shots from
beyond the arc for 41.4 percent.
Mariah Pietrowski led the Blue Hose (6-6, 0-1 BSC) with 17
points. Kristen Stevens added in 12, while Karlee Taylor put up 11
and Sherece Smith grabbed a team-high 10 boards. PC shot 47.1
percent for the game and was 8-of-17 from beyond the arc.
The Lady Bucs sunk three 3-pointers in the first 7:13 of action
to take a 15-10 lead on the Blue Hose. PC fought back with a few
treys of its own, cutting the CSU lead down to just one before two
in the paint from Pietrowski put PC ahead 21-21. The Bucs tied
things up on a free-throw by Jones with 39 seconds to go before
Terry knocked down a last-second three-pointer to five CSU the
34-30 lead at the half.
CSU continued to attack in the early parts of the second half,
taking an eight-point lead on a fast-break layup by Anicia Dotson.
Some quick treys by the Blue Hose put the Bucs in danger, tying the
game at 45-45 before Bratcher sunk another from beyond the arc to
put CSU in front again 48-45. The Bucs continued on from there,
as Alston's free-throw with 1:54 to go put them up by eight once
again. Jones would hit the free-throw line in the closing second,
making both as the Bucs came away with the 76-67 win.
The Lady Buccaneers will continue on with conference play on
Monday, hosting in-state rival Winthrop at the Buc Dome in a 7 p.m.
match up.
