CSU Loses on the Road to Winthrop, 75-53

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers lost their second Big South Conference game of the season to the Winthrop Eagles at a score of 75-53. The loss drops the Bucs' record to 6-9 (0-1, BSC) The victory gives Winthrop a 1-0 start in the Big South and moves their overall record to 7-6 on the season.

The Winthrop Eagles started the game off with a 7-0 run. Despite the early deficit Charleston Southern came back and the score remained close throughout the first half, neither team able to put any distance on the other.

There were 12 lead changes in tonight's game in the first half alone.

The Buccaneers shot only 37% from the field in the first half. Despite their early shooting woes the Bucs trailed by only two points at a score of 34-32.

The Eagles of Winthrop increased their lead to 11 points with another early-half run and continued to bolster their lead throughout the remainder of the game.

The Bucs' first half shooting woes only got worse in the second half. Charleston Southern shot only 1-of-11 from deep and 7-of-24 from the field. Overall the Buccaneers converted on only a third (16-of-48) of their attempts from the field and only a quarter (5-of-20) of their attempts from beyond the arc.

On the other hand the Eagles of Winthrop shot an excellent percentage converting on 56% of their attempts from the field in tonight's game.

The Buccaneers had three players in double-figures in the losing effort. Leading the Buccaneers was senior guard Katie Tull who scored 13 points and shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Kelsey Wasmer added 12 points and eight rebounds and despite being in foul trouble Lakeitha Alston added 11.

The Eagles of Winthrop had four players in double-figures on the night. Leading all scorers was Dequesha McLanahan who scored 19 points on the night.

The Bucs continue their Big South road stand with a trip to Coastal Carolina to try and get their first conference victory this Monday. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
