CHARLESTON, S.C - The Charleston Southern women's basketball
team gutted out a win at home in dramatic fashion against the
Presbyterian Blue Hose at a score of 52-47. The win improves the
Buccaneers' record to 8-9 (2-2 BSC) and drops the Blue Hose to 4-11
(1-3 BSC).
Charleston Southern came out flat today and shot 3-of-19 in the
first ten minutes. Despite shooting so poorly the Bucs were still
in the lead at a score of 11-10.
The Blue Hose were shooting the ball well from deep in the early
going, connecting on 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first
half.
The shooting percentage discrepancy continued to widen
throughout the first half. The half ended with CSU shooting 26%.
The Blue Hose doubled up the Bucs by shooting 52% in the first
half.
The score remained close throughout the first half with a total
of ten lead changes and the highest lead for either team being the
Blue Hose' half time lead of seven points at a score of 30-23.
The Bucs shooting woes seemed to only worsen at the start of the
second half. The Blue Hose extended their lead to ten but the game
never seemed to be out of reach if a few shots fell for the
Bucs.
Despite their poorest shooting performance of the year, the Bucs
were still hanging around and a deep three from Katie Tull would
bring the Bucs within three points with six minutes to play.
Despite all their shooting woes the Bucs still had a chance to win
the game.
Tonight's game seemed to turn on a single play. The biggest play
of the game came at the 2:37 mark when Kelsey Wasmer set a screen
for Helen Terry who faded and knocked down a deep three.
Simultaneously a foul was also called on the Blue Hose for fighting
through the screen that sent Wasmer to the line for two shots. She
connected on both from the charity stripe for an extremely rare
five point play.
That play was a huge change in momentum for the Bucs that got
the crowd back into the game. Charleston Southern had taken their
first lead since the 5:05 mark in the first half.
The two team's roles had seemed to be reversed. Presbyterian
went completely cold on the offensive end. The Blue Hose in fact
did not connect on a single field goal in the final 9:49 of
tonight's contest.
The 19-4 run to finish the game was enough to log an important
Big South victory at home.
Leading the all scorers was CSU senior guard Kelsey Wasmer who
had 19 points and six boards. Also in double figures was Katie
Tull, who had 14 points in the game.
The shocking win brings the Bucs back to .500 in the conference
and a single win from having a .500 overall record.
Charleston Southern's next contest comes on Monday with a home
game against Big South opponent UNC Asheville. Tip-off is set for 7
p.m.
