CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's basketball got their
first win in Big South Conference play tonight over the
Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at a score of 60-53. The win
improves the Bucs' record to 7-9 (1-2 BSC) and drops CCU to 6-8
(0-1 BSC). Two players logged double-doubles for the Buccaneers
tonight. Senior Guard Kelsey Wasmer had 15 points and a career high
13 rebounds and sophomore forward Lakeitha Alston also had 15
points and career high 13 rebounds.
CCU gave Charleston Southern a tough game despite being without
their best player and preseason first team All-Big South conference
player Sydnei Moss due to an undisclosed injury.
From the outset it was apparent that the Chanticleers had done
their homework on the defensive end. There was no help side
responsibility for whoever was checking Charleston Southern's
leading scorer Katie Tull. That made it difficult for the Bucs'
leading scorer to get a clean look from behind the arc.
Neither team was shooting especially well in the first half. CSU
shot 30% from the field and CCU faired slightly better at 38%. The
Bucs trailed for most of the first half and the Chanticleers went
into the locker room with a four-point lead at a score of
29-25.
To start off the second half Charleston Southern changed their
defense to an extended matchup zone. They also made adjustments on
the offensive end of the floor by spreading out the Chanticleers
man-to-man defense and so doing created driving lanes to the
basket.
The score would remain close throughout the second half with the
largest lead for either team being five points. Charleston Southern
would take their first lead of the second half at the 7:30
mark.
The score would remain tight as the minutes wore on and CCU's
Katie Ahaus hit a three pointer with just over a minute remaining
to tie the score at 50 points apiece.
CSU would turn the ball over on the subsequent possession. The
Bucs got a huge stop on defense and earned a chance to take the
last shot, but would turn the ball over again sending the game to
over time.
After a quick score and defensive stop guard Shay Jones went to
the line and hit two clutch free throws in over time to give CSU a
four point advantage. On the next defensive trip Lakeitha Alston
drew a crucial charge with under a minute remaining to give the
Bucs the ball back. Charleston Southern would get two huge
offensive rebounds forcing fouls from CCU to stop the clock. The
Bucs would hit enough free throws to put the game away.
Leading the Chanticleers in scoring was Olivia Irick who had 19
points on the night.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers will return to the friendly
confines of Buccaneer Field House to play host to Presbyterian on
Saturday. Their game will serve as the first game of a CSU
double-header with the men to host the Winthrop Eagles. Tip-off for
that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the men's game to
follow.
