Postgame quotes from CSU vs. High PointFebruary 8, 2010By CSU Sports Information CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern women’s basketball coach Julie Goodenough speaks about her team’s huge 66-60 victory over High Point University Monday night inside CSU Field House. On taking down the preseason favorites: We got down eight at one point with quite a bit of time left on the clock and I told our players, ‘Hey, in our last game we scored 13 points in about three minutes. Eight points is nothing for us.’ Our kids just stayed really fired up and I thought we had some players come off the bench and do some nice things for us. On the contributions from the key members of the team: Danielle Gibson was really good for us defensively tonight. I was really proud of her coming in and getting some quality minutes. She had a key basket for us down the stretch when we were trying to cut their lead down a little bit. Katie (Tull) and Kelsey (Wasmer) just continue to play really tough-minded. Everybody in the league knows that they are two of the very best three-points shooters, and Kelsey has really been exploiting peoples’ weaknesses off her dribble-drive. Katie found her shot in the second half and was ready to shoot every time the ball hit her hands. I was just really proud of their play tonight. Ali (Scwagmeyer) stepped up and played out of position for us again and had another double-digit rebounding effort for us. On the difference in the final two minutes of game: Our team never relaxed and we really started pushing the ball down the floor. Defensively, we got our hands up and had hands in the face of the shooters so they didn’t get wide-open looks. Down the stretch we blocked out and secured rebounds, while not letting them get second and third opportunities to score in the final stretch. On the momentum heading into the team’s next game against Coastal Carolina: Coastal has a very good team with a lot of different offensive weapons. We allowed Sydnei Moss to just go to town on us at Myrtle Beach. We just have to game plan and figure out a way to try and slow her down. She’s an incredible player, and she’s getting double-doubles on a nightly basis. She was really the one that we didn’t have an answer for at Coastal. I felt like our kids played a little bit timid offensively in the first half as well. We have to be ready to come out and attack and get to the free-throw line like we did tonight. I think it’s going to be a really good ball game. |
